Ice Maker Repair
Clear-ice modules, inlet valves, drain pumps and scale problems on Sub-Zero ice makers.
What people ring about
- Production dropped to a handful of cubes a day
- Hollow, cloudy or fused cubes from hard local water
- Meltwater refreezing on the freezer floor or in the bin
In what order
What it usually turns out to be
Ice is where local water shows up first. Production falling to a handful of cubes a day, hollow or chalky cubes, cubes fused into a lump in the bin — those are fill volume and scale far more often than they are a failed module, and the module is one of the more reliable parts of the machine.
-
Fill volume before anything else
A hollow or undersized cube means the mould did not get enough water and harvested what it had. That points at the filter, the inlet valve and the supply line, in that order, and none of them is the ice maker.
-
Scale on the mould and the sensors
Hard water leaves a crust that slows the freeze, throws the harvest timing out and makes cubes cloudy. Descaling and a fresh filter often return a machine that had been written off, and it is the cheapest thing to try.
-
Harvest and thermistor readings
Clear-ice systems harvest on temperature, so a thermistor reading a few degrees high produces long cycles and wet, welded cubes. We meter it rather than trusting the display.
-
The bin, the drain and the pump
Meltwater refreezing on the freezer floor or ridging up in the bin is a drain problem, not a production problem. On undercounter machines the drain pump and the bin sensor are both worth reading before ordering anything.
What it costs
What ice maker repair costs here
Each course below covers parts and labour on Sub-Zero equipment. Where a job lands inside its range comes down to the part and how far back in the cabinet it sits — measured on site, not guessed at over the phone.
The service call
Flat $89 service call covering the visit and full diagnosis, credited against the repair once you approve it.
- Door gasket or seal replacement
- $270–$620
- Evaporator or condenser fan motor
- $300–$660
- Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor
- $280–$600
- Ice maker, water valve or supply line
- $270–$770
- Electronic control board
- $440–$870
- Compressor or sealed-system repair
- $1,450–$3,120
You are given the band on the phone and the firm figure on site, once the fault is confirmed with the unit open. Nothing is dismantled and no part is ordered until you have agreed that number, and the $89 you paid for the visit comes off it in full the moment you approve the work.
For scale $11,980–$21,190 is what a comparable built-in replacement, before installation and cabinetry work comes to. That is the arithmetic behind repairing a cabinet that is otherwise sound.

The unit out by the ramada had quietly stopped producing and we noticed the night guests arrived. Drain pump dead, bin sensor gummed up. New pump, bin scrubbed out, running again. Took two visits to finish.
Kamal J. · North Central Phoenix
Ten days without ice and every reset I tried did nothing. He checked the water supply first, ruled it out, and found the clear-ice module seized. New module, and the bin filled overnight.
Thomasina R. · Arcadia
Output had fallen to a handful of cubes a day, which is nothing in this heat. The mould was crusted with scale and a thermistor was reading high. Cleaned and replaced, and the bin filled by morning.
